The Buttonwoods Musem - Haverhill Historical Society -- Summer Programs

Past Finders Summer Camp, now in its 18th season, is a day camp for children in grades 1-7. Past Finders staff encourages children to appreciate history through hands-on activities, creative arts projects, games and appreciation of the museum’s collection. The return of so many campers attests to the high quality and popularity of Past Finders Summer Camp.

Schedule and Activities

Past Finders Summer Camp is based at the Buttonwoods Museum. Although each session is different, field trips, art projects, games and cooking are an integral part of the weekly activities.

Past Finders Summer Adventure meets Mon-Fri, beginning July 7, 2008. Morning drop-off is at 9:00 am and pick-up is at 4:00 pm (schedule varies for Session 4 – Half Pints). On Friday afternoons at 3:00 pm, parents, family and friends are invited to an open house where campers present their projects from the week.

Grade Levels

Your child's grade level is determined by the grade he/she will be in as of September 2008.

Staff

Camp staff are CPR and First-Aid certified employees of the Haverhill Historical Society.

Session 1:

Gadgets and Contraptions

July 7-11

Invention and discovery are key parts of the history of our nation. In this session, campers will learn how gadgets work, where materials come from and create their own inventions.

Field trips to Covanta Energy and the Museum of Science will fuel our creativity.

Activities include building circuits and switches, designing newspaper structures and building simple machines. Nature, technology, cooking, engineering and crazy ideas are all part of this week of design fun.

Session 2:

Digging into Archaeology

July 14-18

Archaeology is more than simply objects and artifacts; it is the story of a past civilization. Our junior archaeologists will take part in a mock dig, identify the objects they find in a lab and will try cross-mending, dating and researching their objects to reconstruct the lives of the original owners.

A visit to the Museum of Fine Arts and Saugus Iron Works are part of this exciting week.

Session 3:

Young Americans

July 28 - August 1

European settlers arrived in the Haverhill area in the 17th century, but Native Americans had lived in Pentucket for thousands of years. In this session, campers will learn first hand how Native Americans and early settlers lived.

Activities include harvesting fruits and vegetables
at Ingaldsby Farm,

cooking, working in the garden, story telling, games and creating homemade crafts. Boys and girls will end the week with a Feast of Thanksgiving.

For children in grades 1-5. Fee: $200

Session 4:

Act Like a Lady

August 4-8

This session is devoted to exploring the lives of women and girls in the Victorian Era. The Industrial Revolution, the Civil War, abolition, and the suffrage movement coincided with a time of high fashion, arts and crafts, and extensive decoration. Campers will explore the 19th century through arts and crafts projects, cooking, role playing and hosting an elegant Suffrage Tea for their parents on Friday at 3 pm.

Session 5:

Come Sail Away

August 6 - 10

The Merrimack River connected Haverhill to ports around the world.Haverhill-built vessels hunted whales, sailed the Pacific, and transported exotic trade items from England, China, and the West Indies.

In this annual favorite, campers will explore the Merrimack River as a resource and link to the world.

Activities include fishing, exploring the Buttonwoods Trail, sailor crafts, cooking and sailing aboard the schooner Thomas E. Lannon!

Sibling Discount

For families with more than one child enrolled in the same camp session, a discount of $25 will be applied for each additional child.

Sibling Discounts do NOT apply to siblings enrolled in
different camp sessions.

Medical release /
History Forms

As a state licensed camp, a Medical Release Form and a Medical/Immunization Record (completed by your family physician) are required by Massachusetts state law.

Forms will be sent to you upon receipt of registration
and are available below.

Past Finders Summer Camp must comply with the Massachusetts Department of Public Health and be licensed by the local board of health. All medical forms must be returned by June 15, 2008 in order to comply with state regulations. All camp policies and staff histories are available for review upon request.
 

Registration Information

In order to confirm your child's registration, a non-refundable deposit of $25 is required for each session. The $25 is deductible from the session fee. Full payment for all sessions must be received by July 2, 2008. Registrations must include a $25 Family Membership and will be accepted by mail or in person. Cancellation Policy

Cancellations made prior to 7 days before the start of each session will receive a 50% refund. No refunds will be given once your child's camp session has begun.
 

Financial Assistance

Limited financial assistance for campers is available. Please submit a completed registration form for your child along with a letter stating your financial need and what amount, if any, your family can contribute. Financial aid is awarded on a first come basis and is dependent on available funds.
